Captain Brian Mathey, a skilled fishing guide, has a deep connection to the waters of Pinellas County. From a young age, he immersed himself in the pristine flats of the area, honing his fishing skills and developing a profound love for the sport. At just 16 years old, he purchased his first boat and embarked on a journey to share his passion with others.
In 2005, at the age of 22, Captain Mathey obtained his captain's license, marking the official beginning of his guiding career. With a strong desire to provide clients with unforgettable fishing experiences, he started taking them out on the water, eager to create lifelong memories.
Beyond his dedication to fishing, Captain Mathey cherishes his role as a family man. He is blessed with three children, Juliette, Josette, and Fisher, and a loving wife named Nicolette. Guiding young kids and teaching them the art of fishing brings him immense joy. Being a father himself, he has learned to appreciate the simple pleasures in life, and nothing compares to witnessing a child proudly display their first catch.
In the early years of his guiding career, Captain Mathey faced challenging economic times. Determined to support his growing family, he also pursued a career as a firefighter. Juggling two full-time jobs allowed him to provide for his loved ones while still dedicating over 250 days a year to guiding and creating extraordinary fishing experiences. However, after 13 years of balancing both professions, he made the decision to leave the fire department behind and focus his undivided attention on guiding and cherishing precious moments with his family.
Captain Mathey takes great pride in his experience, patience, and positive attitude, which he has cultivated over the years. These qualities contribute to making every fishing trip with him an enjoyable and memorable experience.
Throughout his career, Captain Mathey has participated in various fishing tournaments, both as a competitor and as a director. Notable events include the IFA Redfish Tour, Peter T. Assimack, Johnson Invitational, YMCA tournaments, and the Turtle Slam, among others. He has achieved multiple victories in several of these competitions, showcasing his exceptional fishing skills. Additionally, Captain Mathey served as the director for the Xtreme Redfish Tour out of Anclote for many years, amassing numerous wins and earning the prestigious title of Angler of the Year twice.
