The Unalakleet River Lodge, situated on the bank of its namesake river in the Northwest Alaskan wilderness, is a freshwater fly angler’s dream destination. The Unalakleet River boasts one of the most impressive Pacific salmon runs on the planet. King, chum, silver, and pink salmon — as well as Dolly Varden and native arctic grayling — are plentiful and exciting targets for anglers of all skill levels. The lodge’s compound of beautiful spruce log dwellings and community spaces is the only fishing lodge on the river, offering anglers unparalleled access to one of Alaska’s finest fisheries. Amber Haynes, founder of women’s hunting apparel brand McKenna Quinn, will host you on a week-long expedition chasing trophy fish in this breathtaking location. The Unalakleet River is a world-class fly fishing destination. Ocean-bright salmon, vibrantly colored Dolly Varden, and native arctic grayling occupy the river all summer long. These iconic Alaskan fish are caught from wadeable gravel bars or drifting through deep runs and pools throughout the river, making for an incredibly diverse fishing experience.
Along the banks of the Unalakleet, it’s common to see bears, moose, eagles, and more native fauna enjoying the Alaskan summer sun — and seasonal salmon smorgasbord. The river features a number of wide oxbow turns along its path toward the Bering Sea, and breathtaking views await seemingly around every corner.
The Unalakleet River Lodge is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and vast summer tundra, enveloped by iconic Alaskan scenery. The lodge lies just a few miles from the river’s confluence with the Bering Sea. Its location allows anglers to target healthy sea-run fish early in their long voyage back to their natal stretches, miles and miles upriver. Unalakleet is a small village, accessible only by plane, with cultural roots deeply entrenched in the wilderness that surrounds it. If you’re looking for an authentic Alaskan experience, look no further. Each trip to Unalakleet offers opportunities to understand and appreciate the history and culture of the local people, including their traditional Unaligmiut Eskimo subsistence lifestyle.
When you’re not on the water, you’ll be well taken care of at the Unalakleet River Lodge. The main lodge, completed in 1976, overlooks the river and features a central ‘Great Room,’ gourmet kitchen, and hand-carved bar.
After swapping fishing stories over gourmet meals, you’ll return to a private cabin that has electric heating, comfortable beds, and private baths with hot water. These peaceful riverside cabins are the perfect place to unwind and recharge for next day’s adventures on the river.
