There are great fishing trips, and then there are places that completely redefine what “wild” feels like.
This article covers:
After spending a week at Sandspit Adventures, we left convinced that this isn’t just one of the best fishing destinations in North America, it’s one of the most remarkable experiences we’ve ever had. In fact, before our plane even took off, we booked our trip for next year.
That almost never happens.
A Place That Feels Untouched by Time
The first thing that strikes you about Haida Gwaii isn’t the fishing.
It’s the untouched landscape.
Towering old-growth forests stretch to the edge of the ocean. Waterfalls seem to appear around every corner. Crystal-clear rivers carve through dense rainforest before emptying into the Pacific. Everywhere you look, there are mountains disappearing into the mist, secluded beaches, rocky shorelines, and miles of coastline that feel exactly as they did hundreds of years ago.
It’s one of the few places we’ve visited that genuinely feels untouched.
Almost like stepping back in time.
Every morning began with a boat ride from Sandspit through the narrows toward the wild Pacific coast. Every afternoon ended the same way. Those rides quickly became one of our favorite parts of the trip. The scenery constantly changed with the tides and weather, revealing hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, waterfalls spilling into the ocean, and endless stretches of wilderness without another person in sight.
Even if you never dropped a fishing line into the water, that ride alone would be worth the trip.
Part of what makes Haida Gwaii feel so alive is that you’re sharing it with wildlife everywhere you look.
Whales surfaced around our boats throughout the week.
Bald eagles perched high above nearly every shoreline.
Black bears wandered the beaches searching for food.
Sitka deer appeared along the coastline.
Albatross soared above the rolling waves.
Jellyfish drifted beneath the surface in crystal-clear water.
Every day felt like an expedition through one of the last truly wild ecosystems left on the continent.

Of course, you’re also here to fish.
And the fishing absolutely lives up to its reputation.
Over the course of the week we targeted Chinook salmon, coho salmon, halibut, and lingcod, returning each afternoon with incredible catches that we’d eventually bring home to enjoy with our families.
Landing powerful Chinook in open Pacific water is an experience every angler should have at least once. Add in giant halibut, aggressive lingcod, and schools of bright coho, and every day offered something completely different.
The diversity is what makes this fishery so special. Few places allow you to experience this caliber of salmon fishing while also targeting world-class bottom fish in the same day.
And yes, we left with coolers full of some of the best seafood imaginable.
Sandspit Adventures Gets Every Detail Right
An incredible destination deserves an incredible lodge.
Sandspit Adventures delivers exactly that.
From the moment you arrive, it’s clear that Chad Whiteside and his team have obsessed over every detail.
The boats are immaculate, comfortable, and purpose-built for the Pacific.
The equipment is first-class.
The guides know these waters intimately.
And somehow, after spending all day on the ocean, you’re welcomed back each evening with meals that rival many fine dining restaurants.
Everything from breakfast before sunrise to dinner after a long day on the water felt thoughtfully prepared and genuinely exceptional.
This isn’t simply a fishing lodge.
It’s a memorable outdoor experience built for people who appreciate world-class service without sacrificing authenticity.
More Than a Fishing Trip
One of the best parts of the week was sharing it with my dad.
Some trips fade over time.
Others become stories you’ll tell for decades.
Watching whales surface beside the boat. Running through the narrows each morning. Exploring untouched coastlines. Landing salmon together. Laughing over dinner after another unforgettable day on the water.
Those are the moments we’ll remember long after we’ve forgotten how many fish we caught.
The greatest compliment you can give an outfitter is returning.
We didn’t even wait until we got home.
Before leaving the lodge, we booked our trip for next year and added two spots for my brothers-in-law.
That’s just a testament to what Chad Whiteside has built.
Sandspit Adventures isn’t simply selling fishing trips. They’re creating experiences that stay with people long after they leave Haida Gwaii.
If you’re putting together your outdoor bucket list, move Sandspit Adventures in Haida Gwaii to the very top.
