Private trip guided by Cleve

Brown Dog Sportfishing 10-19 years of experience

About

Fly fishing the lowcountry surrounding Charleston, SC is a passion for Brown Dog Sportfishing.

Let us take you away from every day life and to our favorite flats and back creeks!

Our most popular target here in Charleston for fly anglers is redfish. In the warmer months, we hunt these fish on flooded grass flats looking for tails waving in the air. During cooler weather, these fish school up into large groups and provide excellent sight fishing on our shallow, low tide mud flats. Out typical slot fish run 15-23" with fish up to and over 30" not uncommon.

Tackle
We recommend and use the following for our local redfish:
7 - 9 weight rod and reel
7 - 9ft tapered leader
Fly patterns resembling shrimp, crabs, and bait fish

We are also one of the few guides in the area offering Tarpon trips on fly when in season (July-October). These fish represent the ultimate challenge in our fishery and are for the angler looking to test themselves. Available as 3/4 and full day only.

Brown Dog Sportfishing uses the finest gear from Orvis but guests are welcome to bring their favorite rod(s) as well.

Captain Cleve Hancock is a born fisherman. Growing up in Florida he spent every available moment on the water. From a young age, fishing was a driving passion that would shape his life, often daydreaming in class of the next tide or what could lie on the next flat.

After moving to Charleston, SC for college, Capt. Cleve felt an immediate connection to the lowcountry fishery. Exploring the marsh for great fishing became all consuming and he knew this is where he wanted to set his anchor.

Now a full time guide, Capt. Cleve created Brown Dog Sportfishing to share this love of fishing and the outdoors with others. While his warm personality make the day enjoyable, his knowledge of the fish and the marsh make it successful. Capt. Cleve takes pride in being a teacher and feels that whether a novice or expert angler, there is always something to learn while on the water.

Capt. Cleve is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed and insured captain that holds holds first aid and CPR certifications through the Red Cross. He is also an Orvis Endorsed guide.
