Captain Max Hamlin Flats Fishing

We had booked one day of fishing with two days in Key West with both days being less than ideal with 25+ MPH wind, but Capt. Max worked to take us on the best of the “less than ideal weather” fishing days. I’ve fished for over 30 years, but this was going to be my first time targeting the species in the flats of Key West, and boy, did Max not disappoint! At the first stop of the day, Max put my wife and I on multiple juvenile tarpon, and I managed to land one. Fisherman’s fault, not the guide’s, that we didn’t get a few more. We then moved into the flats where Max almost immediately put us on some big bone fish. Managed to catch a nice 6 pounder and broke one off. Had several opportunities at more big bones, but couldn’t get the hook up. Again the angler, not the guide! We then moved on to look for more tarpon, but weren’t able to locate any that were willing. Can’t catch fish at every spot! After that, we moved to another area of the flats to look for barracuda. Couldn’t find any monsters, but caught a few in the 30” range with tons of action— chasing up to the boat and big blow ups! Great day on the water even with the less than ideal conditions, and managed to catch three new species! Capt Max is an awesome dude to be on the water with! Would 15/10 recommend!

Captain Max was great! I’m not much a fisherman but I wanted to have a fun moment with my son-in-law who does love to fish. Max showed us some amazing places and spots we would never have seen or found around Key West. He was a great guide and super helpful. The conditions weren’t the best, but we did catch a glimpse of some Bonefish, came so close to catching a Barracuda, and saw several Lemon sharks. One of coolest moments of the trip was seeing a big Eagle Ray breach up out of the water! Would definitely recommend a day with Captain Max! Thanks Max!

My son and I booked Max for a week last May--the previous year my son had fished with him at about the same time. We had tremendous tarpon fishing with Max with multiple hookups each day, several times I think we hit double figures for hookups. We're in the school of thought that says, "crank down the drag and really lay into the fish"--so we get the first few jumps and either land the fish or lose 'em within about 15 minutes (no hour-long battles). Max really knows what he is doing and supplies all of the gear, eliminating the hassles associated with bringing your own. He is also great to be around! We're coming back this coming May!

We had a great time, my son and I, out with Max to various flats around Key West. Max had fly gear for me and spin rods for son. We saw a load of rays, sharks, box fish, even a manatee and more while we sought and captured the elusive bonefish. Great morning. Max is knowledgeable and cheerful. Would go out with him again.
