E.J. Stern, Orvis Endorsed Flyfishing guide, owns and operates Smith River Outfitters and Raleigh Flyfishing. We pride ourselves on offering superior flyfishing and spin fishing experiences in Virginia & North Carolina. We welcome the opportunity to work with anglers of all skill levels; our goal is to ensure every angler who fishes with us has a successful great experience. As our passion for the sport is informed by our respect of the rivers and environment, we are active volunteer stewards and members of partner organizations Triangle Flyfishers and Smith River of Trout Unlimited and Dan River Basin Association.

VerifiedDespite it being a very hot day, our guide (Rhen Bumgardner) put us on the fish and we caught lots of spotted bass, including two citation sized bass. He was also a great coach as my friend and I are used to trout fishing and the technique for bass on the fly was very different. Rhen was great making sure we stayed hydrated and that we didn't over do it in the heat. This was our second trip with Rhen. He is a terrific guide that I would gladly hire again!

VerifiedA group of us fished for 2 days with EJ and his guides on the Smith River. They all did an excellent job of putting us on fish in some difficult conditions - we had low water and warm temperatures. They were also very patient working with us on improving our nymphing and streamer fishing techniques. If you are interested in fishing the Smith River for trout, I strongly urge you to reach out to Raleigh Flyfishing.

VerifiedTrip was set for spring but low water changed tactics. It was a very technical trip and guide EJ STERN taught me alot about presentation. Caught a mess of fish and missed just as many. Great day all around and improved my game tremendously. Thanks EJ
