E.J. Stern, Orvis Endorsed Flyfishing guide, owns and operates Smith River Outfitters and Raleigh Flyfishing. We pride ourselves on offering superior flyfishing and spin fishing experiences in Virginia & North Carolina. We welcome the opportunity to work with anglers of all skill levels; our goal is to ensure every angler who fishes with us has a successful great experience. As our passion for the sport is informed by our respect of the rivers and environment, we are active volunteer stewards and members of partner organizations Triangle Flyfishers and Smith River of Trout Unlimited and Dan River Basin Association.

VerifiedPerfect float trip on the Smith River. Easy drive from Winston-Salem. Easy put in and take out location. Great fishing with great gear. E.J. was very accommodating and as with any guided trip, I left having learned a few things to make me a better fly fisherman. Highly recommended. Fantastic fishing close to the Piedmont.

VerifiedHad a good day on the water with E.J. Stern on the Smith River, with low and clear water conditions, we got into the more technical aspects of the sport (adding more tools to my tool box) which was beneficial to me. Good productive day with a good number of wild brown trout hooked along with a number of stocked rainbows. Which made my day especially fun was the late afternoon hatch making dry fly fishing awesome landing several nice fish.

VerifiedI have to say great because as we all know fish are fish and fishing is fishing. Would I fish with EJ again? Absolutely yes. When the fishing is easy that speaks for itself, what's the big deal? But, end of October, cold breezy and drizzling rain are not the best conditions but EJ put it together and brought fish to the net, 8 as I recall. I plan to be back in May 2026, better conditions and more fish. Thx EJ
