An Introduction to The Untamed Amazon and Brazil’s Rio Marié

It would be an understatement to say that the Rio Marié is the premier trophy peacock bass fishery in the world – more fish over 20 pounds are caught in the Marié than in the next five top peacock bass fisheries combined! These remarkable fish are the pride and joy of local indigenous guides who have a lifetime of experience exploring the Marié’s waters. Two highly-trained, immensely knowledgeable guides will accompany each angler, making for an epic team of trophy seekers. The waters you’ll fish are located entirely inside a far-reaching indigenous territory – meaning that you are unlikely to see another human, let alone another angler. 

A tributary of the upper Rio Negro, the Rio Marié originates in the Northwest corner of the Brazilian Amazon, not far from the Colombian border. 500 miles from the jungle city of Manaus, the Rio Maríe offers peace and seclusion that is simply unheard of for such a productive fishery. Anglers will board the Untamed Amazon directly from a float plane – offering easy access to water that is accessible only to a lucky few. The highly mobile luxury vessel allows anglers to explore new water each day and make the most of the expansive fishery. 

The Untamed Amazon is an impressive feat of green engineering – designed to be capable and comfortable, while keeping its ecological footprint to a minimum. The ship’s main floor has 8 elegant suits – complete with private bathrooms, hot water showers, air conditioning, and ample space for clothing storage. The main deck features a bar and entertainment area, lounge, living and dining room, as well as an outdoor observation deck which offers unparalleled views of the Amazonian stars. Authentic Amazonian meals, fine wines, satellite internet, and daily laundry services round out the Untamed Amazon’s luxurious amenities and make this fishing vessel truly unlike any other. 

Day 1

Upon arrival in Manaus, all anglers will spend a night in a local hotel (included in the trip price). 

Day 2

Following a breakfast buffet, the host will pick you up to take the commercial flight service from Manaus to São Gabriel da Cachoeira (1:30 hr average flight time). Upon arrival, anglers will be transported from Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira to the Untamed Amazon on a scenic 3 hour boat ride. 

On board the Untamed Amazon, you will be shown to your stateroom, then greeted in the upstairs lounge by the guides and fishing team. After a cold drink and delicious lunch, anglers will be given a brief explanation of the daily fishing plans and schedule. The Untamed Amazon will navigate to the next day’s fishing spot, determined by the head guide. Anglers will have plenty of time to get settled in and prepare tackle for the next day’s fishing.

Day 3 - Day 8

Each day, teams of two anglers will fish one of the beats of the Rio Marié (including tributaries and lagoons), with one professional English-speaking fly fishing guide and a local indigenous guide –  in brand new, specially designed fishing boats. These wide-bodied, 20-foot boats have two casting platforms (one at either end of the boat, so both anglers can fish at the same time), a center console, and are powered by 90hp, 4-stroke motors, as well as remote-control electric motors.

Day 9

After an early breakfast, anglers will disembark the Untamed Amazon and take a boat trip back to Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira. Upon arrival, anglers will be transported to the local airport to take a commercial flight back to Manaus. If you would prefer not to take the red-eye flight out of Manaus, another night’s stay at the boutique hotel can be arranged (this would not be included in the package). Should this be the case, the transfer driver will pick you up the following day, according to your flight departure time, and transport you to the International Airport.
