<img src="https://static.anycreek.com/content/Michael_at_Bray_s_Island_af8326bf66.jpg" alt="Michael-at-Bray-s-Island.jpg">Michael’s appreciation for art dates back to his college years, when he studied art history. “I distinctly remember sitting in front of Winslow Homer’s <a href="https://collections.mfa.org/objects/31042/the-fog-warning?ref=blog.anycreek.com">The Fog Warning</a>,” he recounts of an iconic 1885 scene of a weathered halibut fisherman in a rowboat, laden with fish, battling the New England swell as he struggles toward a distant mothership cloaked in fog. “I saw it at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston while writing papers. That was one of the first pieces I remember really responding to, and Homer to me was one of the original, authentic sporting enthusiasts.”Sporting art has a long, rich history, and Winslow Homer is widely recognized as one of the forefathers of the sporting art genre. From his introduction to Homer, Michael saw his appreciation for and interest in the different styles and subtleties of sporting art quickly grow. “Guiding out in Colorado segued into a winter job at an art gallery out there,” he says, recalling his introduction to the art business and the process of sourcing good art. “I always thought to myself — I can do this well enough where I think I can combine my passions to meet a certain demand. I wanted to predominantly focus on sporting and wildlife subjects and we've remained true to that over the past 25 years — although we've definitely broadened our offerings quite a bit. We try to offer something for all walks of sporting enthusiasts — that includes different subjects and different budgets. Now we represent a range of talent from up-and-coming, decorative artists to those that are the finest in their field, as well as deceased artists who were their predecessors: <a href="https://www.sportsmansgallery.com/artists/art/?at=OgdenMPleissner&amp;ref=blog.anycreek.com">Ogden Pleissner</a>, <a href="https://www.sportsmansgallery.com/artists/art/?at=AidenLRipley&amp;ref=blog.anycreek.com">Aiden Lassell Ripley</a>, Arthur Tait, <a href="https://www.sportsmansgallery.com/artists/art/?at=EdmundHOsthaus&amp;ref=blog.anycreek.com">Edmund Osthaus</a>, and <a href="https://www.sportsmansgallery.com/artists/art/details/?inv=RosP0039&amp;at=PercivalLRosseau&amp;ref=blog.anycreek.com">Percival Rosseau</a>. It spans a lot of generations.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://static.anycreek.com/content/Pleissner_Angling_On_A_River_114f660e7b.jpeg" alt="PleissnerAnglingOnARiver.jpeg"><figcaption>Ogden Pleissner's "Angling on a river"</figcaption></figure>Michael soon expanded his business from its original home in Atlanta, Georgia, to Beaver Creek, Colorado; Charleston, South Carolina; and Nashville, Tennessee. Diversifying location proved a valuable business strategy, as each gallery curates its works to best meet the demands of local patrons. “Beaver Creek has a very diverse clientele from all over the country and all over the world, so we try to have a little bit of everything there. But we obviously handle a lot of work focusing on Western big game, Western fly fishing scenes — things of that nature. Texas hunting scenes are also very popular because we have so many Texans come out to that area. But we also have many southerners from Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. These folks often relate to scenes of quail hunting in the pines versus the scrub brush of South Texas. So diversity is really dictated by the clientele that's coming through the door.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://static.anycreek.com/content/Reece_Texas_Bound_f7f4318d79.jpeg" alt="ReeceTexasBound.jpeg"><figcaption>Maynard Reece's "Texas bound"</figcaption></figure>An additional focus at Michael’s Charleston gallery is the specialty niche of early 20th-century Charleston Renaissance art. “That gallery houses a lot more on southern pine quail hunting, white-tailed deer, and flats fishing. But Charleston Renaissance art is an even more specialty niche that we’ve focused on over the last ten years,” Michael explains. “Between World War I and World War II, there was a group of artists who were both local to the Charleston lowcountry area and visiting from up North. Their period works focus predominantly on Southern and lowcountry scenes. Think old Southern sharecropper cabins, beautiful live oak stands, other southern landscapes, and architectural depictions of downtown Charleston.” The Charleston Renaissance period seems aptly named, both stylistically and ideologically. These works capture the high-contrast sublimity and romanticism of their Italian Renaissance counterparts, while their subject matter speaks to an important era of rebirth in the Southern art scene.On the sporting side, Michael’s favorite pieces are illustrations from the 1930s through the mid 1970s. “These works are fascinating because they influenced The Great Generation,” explains Michael. “Many of these pieces romanticized a certain lifestyle — owning a couple of gun dogs and pursuing a ‘gentleman’s sport.’ They influenced the aspirational nature of that lifestyle for so many folks back then.” For those interested in the history and evolution of sporting practices, some of these early works depict unique traditions that might raise some eyebrows amongst modern hunters and anglers. “There are some wonderful scenes of turkey drives, which are now outlawed after they devastated the entire turkey population of South Georgia,” Michael explains. “These hunts were run with beaters and dogs, much like a European driven pheasant hunt, where gunners were literally pass-shooting turkeys as they flew over. For me, it's interesting to see how people respond to those types of things. Some people are really averse to that type of outdated sport, but to me, these are really unique historical examples in sporting history which also paved the way for early conservation efforts.”It’s clear that Michael’s own outdoor background positions him well to understand the significance and value of the art he handles, as well as the demands of his clientele. “In my mind, authenticity defines great sporting art,” says Michael, “and sporting enthusiasts know it and can immediately identify it. If you’ve done a lot of quail hunting, you understand there is a certain way that things typically play out between dogs and hunters, and other things just don’t happen. The best artists understand all the details. For example, if you don’t understand fly fishing, you might paint a casting scene with a tailing loop, or maybe a line form that is physically impossible to achieve with a fly rod.” Authenticity is certainly important to the trained eyes of many hunters and anglers in the market for new pieces. This is not to say that photorealism defines great art, as many more abstract outdoor artists capture the emotions of color, light, and movement that even photos cannot accomplish. “The power of sporting art is connecting people with times afield,” notes Michael. “We always half-joke that we’re selling memories, not paintings. People almost immediately gravitate to scenes they relate to. When it comes to matching a prospective buyer with a piece, it’s often a matter of blending personal interests with medium, size, and budget.” Admittedly, some people’s sporting interests are extremely specific, but this presents a fun and challenging aspect of Michael’s job. “I love bird-dogging super unique works. They're often rare and harder to find, but if you tell me what you like, I’ll do my best to find it.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://static.anycreek.com/content/Susinno_Sharing_The_Wealth_73e6ba4f10.jpeg" alt="SusinnoSharingTheWealth.jpeg"><figcaption>Mark Sussino's "Sharing the wealth"</figcaption></figure>Thinking back, Michael’s guiding and fly shop days revealed a number of ideological connections between the art world and the outdoor experience business. “We're a customer service driven business,” he stresses, “and I want clients to enjoy the experience. Sure, I want them to feel like they got a good value, but I want them to feel like they were treated really well. These investments are luxuries, not necessities — just like booking an expensive fishing or hunting trip. People can buy what they want from whomever they want. We want them to buy from us because they enjoy the experience and the relationship, and I'm happy to say a substantial base of our business is repeat collectors who I know very well, and get to hunt and fish with regularly. That’s what I’m truly proud of.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://static.anycreek.com/content/Swan_The_Guide_92b8426e86.jpeg" alt="SwanTheGuide.jpeg"><figcaption>John Swan's "The guide"</figcaption></figure>Michael also appreciates the significant influence that guides and outfitters have on outdoor culture, and believes that the best sporting artists have the utmost respect for the guiding community. “You can go back to Winslow Homer's famous images of guides in the Adirondacks, or look to contemporaries like <a href="https://www.sportsmansgallery.com/artists/art/details/?inv=HarE1171&amp;at=EldridgeHardie&amp;ref=blog.anycreek.com">Eldridge Hardie</a> who was recently commissioned to portray an Atlantic salmon lodge’s entire guide staff — just to pay homage to their craft. I happen to know Eldridge took that task very seriously and had known some of those guides for decades. I think a big part of that respect stems from the fact that those are the guys who will tell you right from wrong.” Indeed, if authenticity is a crucial characteristic of exceptional sporting art, who better to inform the benchmarks than guides who live it every day? Michael recounts one fascinating story about Carl Rungius, one of the most valuable sporting artists of the late 1920s through 1950s. “He was mainly a painter who executed a single sculpture — a bighorn sheep cast in bronze. His personal sheep guide actually saw it after Rungius had already cast a couple versions. The guide found flaw in the anatomy of the original castings, and even though his sculptures were already in production, Rungius went back and fixed the original mold. He knew that the guide knew much more about the anatomy of the sheep than he ever could, but what’s cool is the market also recognizes his commitment to accuracy. Later versions with increased accuracy have sold at up to 3 times the valuation of the originals.” Great artists and art-lovers know that guides have always played an integral role in dictating the narrative of sporting art and culture, because nothing can teach expertise like routinely and completely immersing oneself in the field season after season. Undoubtedly, a younger generation of guides and artists are already sculpting the next chapter of sporting art’s history, and Michael is excited to showcase that work too. Only time will tell what these depictions reveal of our ever-changing relationships with fish and game.

Art in the Outdoors: Michael Paderewski

“It was like being exposed to this whole new culture,” says Honson, reflecting on his childhood in the heart of Miami, pre-social media — when the rod and gun store was the main arena for swapping stories and learning about what people were seeing on the water and in the marsh. “After school, I always hung out at the local tackle shop to hear all the old-timers talk about their experiences fishing and hunting. It brought so much life to the sport and is a big part of why I’ve always felt so naturally drawn to fishing and hunting.”Although these hobbies might not seem like obvious choices for a big-city kid like Honson — who did not grow up in an outdoorsy family — he attributes his love for exploring different cultures to his urban upbringing. He developed a passion for food during his youth in the Miami melting pot, where he was exposed to all sorts of different cuisines. During his college years, Honson’s favorite TV show was Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations,” with its culturally immersive approach to discovering new places and people through food. Honson believes Bourdain was one of his biggest influences as a young kid — right alongside fishing personalities like Flip Pallot, Tim Mahaffey, Andy Mill, and the late, great Jose Wejebe. Like with both food and fishing, cultural immersion was a large part of the draw to waterfowling for Honson. “If you’re going to spend time in the Everglades, why not do it duck hunting?,” he asks. “It’s part of really understanding the place in a different way — chest-deep and surrounded by gators.” It didn’t take long for Honson to develop a love for the waterfowl of South Florida, with blue-winged teal sitting atop the list as his favorite quarry. “They fly fast, they taste good, they’re easy to clean, and readily available,” he says. “Now, I’ll admit I fish on a much more technical level than hunt, but there’s just something about it. And there’s nothing like seeing a flight of teal work your decoys.”Honson alway felt an attraction to the sport of waterfowling, although his deep-dive started less than a decade ago when he was invited on his very first duck hunt by two close friends. “I got the bug after that first hunt and the rest is history,” he explains, reminiscing about nights spent scouring the internet for shotgun maintenance tips. He remembers wrapping his shiny black shotgun in camo — all before even really knowing what he was in for. “I had never even worn waders before my first hunt,” he admits. But rather than intimidate, this newness and ‘trial by fire’ approach were what ultimately made his successes in the marsh so rewarding. Honson believes that “we as humans are creatures who love to learn, and there’s no greater reward than becoming well-versed in a topic.” From Honson’s perspective, education plays a crucial role in personal development — in hunting, fishing, and beyond. While everyone starts out as a novice, Honson sees a natural and necessary progression from student to teacher, guided to guide. This has motivated him in his own outdoor career to maximize his understanding of the target species and natural resources he relies on. “Some things are up to natural cycles and weather patterns,” he explains. “For instance, this year was a banner duck-hunting year in our area because of the cold fronts we had. Over the years, we’ve seen similar fluctuations with the redfish populations in Florida Bay. Habitat loss and water quality are also big influencing factors that we need to stay in tune with as well.” Pressure from other anglers is another big force, Honson admits. “Fishing near an urban area like Miami means a lot of our fish are more pressured than they would be elsewhere. I’m often showing clients how to adjust their retrieve or their cast to fish to more pressured fish. So this stuff is important to understand both in the short-term, so you can succeed each day, and in the long-term, in order to properly manage these resources.”Like all great guides, Honson is a student-turned-teacher and he loves watching a client grow in the sport. “It’s the most rewarding part,” he says. “Once you feel you have a great handle on your skillset as a fisherman or hunter, you aim to pass along what you have learned to the next generation that deserves it. I enjoy the watching my anglers develop their cast, presentation, and overall approach to technical fishing. &nbsp;Some of the best moments start with guiding your angler to their first shot at a tailing permit or bonefish, watching their reaction, and then talking them through the presentation. &nbsp;Or the look on your angler’s face when they stick their first adult tarpon and feel a hundred pounds of silver glory go airborne.”Thinking back to his childhood, Honson remembers being given a choice on his 12th birthday. “My dad said I could choose between a Remington 20-gauge 1100 youth shotgun, or this shiny, new Old Florida No. 55 large-arbor fly reel with a 9-weight GL3 Classic fly rod. &nbsp;It was such a tough choice, but I went with the fly rod. Sure, I spend a lot more time fishing, probably because of where I grew up, but I love both fishing and hunting. &nbsp;I would consider myself more of a hunter only because my style of technical fishing is more similar to hunting than going out with a bobber and a cane pole.” &nbsp;But ultimately, declaring an affinity for one activity over the other may not really matter. “It’s actually hard for me to make a distinction between hunting and fishing when you boil it down. &nbsp;I feel like growing up, lots of people just did both and you were just considered an outdoorsman.”

Dabbling in waterfowl: Capt. Honson Lau

We sat down with company owner Nathaniel Linville to learn a little bit more about the ideology behind the business that he and his wife, Kat, have run since April of 2009.“Sure, The Angling Company is a fly shop, but we wanted to do it right,” says Nathaniel. &nbsp;You may think a commitment to doing things right sounds vague or wishy-washy, but think again. &nbsp;Nathaniel’s own angling accolades include four IGFA world records, and Kat holds four of her own as well. &nbsp;It’s clear that for Nathaniel and Kat, full-on immersion and complete dedication are crucial elements of their success, both on and off the water. &nbsp;“Look, my wife and I are diehard fishermen, but you gotta know what you're talking about,” states Nathaniel. &nbsp;“Many people love fishing, but do you love it enough to have spent a really long time doing it, at the expense of doing other things?” The answer is certainly “yes” for Nathaniel and Kat, as they are truly committed to living this passion. &nbsp;This allows them to spend extensive time around the Keys fishery, and its constituent guides, all the year round.When Nathaniel first arrived in the Keys many years ago, he looked to local icons like Sandy Moret as inspirations. &nbsp;In addition to owning Florida Keys Outfitters, in Islamorada, Sandy is an accomplished fly tournament angler of legendary stature. &nbsp;“As an angler, there's so much to look up to there,” says Nathaniel. &nbsp;“And in terms of his shop, it would be nice to look back one day and say I created something comparable to his program.” As enclaves of local knowledge, fly shops have a certain responsibility to provide visitors with gear, intel, and advice that may mean the difference between success and failure on the water. &nbsp;“What sets us apart is our ability to give people the right advice,” says Nathaniel. &nbsp;“If you ask us enough questions, the answer will eventually be ‘I don't know,’ but we'll be able to answer more questions than anyone else about rigging and fishing and equipment.”Given the toughness of the Key’s fishery, Nathaniel knows his shop’s role is paramount in facilitating successful stays for anglers. &nbsp;“We can help folks get set up with a good guide, and we've helped develop a lot of long-term relationships between clients and guides that have been very fruitful and, at this point, have nothing to do with us.” &nbsp;The Angling Company works with a number of talented, local guides with impressive guiding resumes. &nbsp;These folks know how to consistently put people in the position to catch bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook, and other species that the Keys fishery is known for. &nbsp;Regardless of pursuit, the shop strives to be a resource for what is tried and true — be it gear, rigging, relationships, and even casting — while also recognizing that long-term credibility means constantly pushing the envelope. &nbsp;Indeed, for Nathaniel, the biggest challenge of running a fly shop in Key West is ensuring he can answer all of his patrons' questions. “The people who fish down here are fucking good,” he admits. “So I need to be able to teach people something new — whether they fish one hundred days a year, or they’ve never fished a day in their lives. &nbsp;It doesn’t matter whether it's a leader formula, a new fly from a talented local tyer, a casting tip, or a lead to a great new guide relationship. That’s a real responsibility to have answers.”The Keys is by no means an easy fishery for anglers of any skill level to tackle. &nbsp;It has long been considered the ultimate proving ground for shallow water sight-fishing in the United States. &nbsp;“I think what attracts people to flats fishing is that it's difficult,” Nathaniel notes. &nbsp;“And the fish are under more pressure here than in other places like Mexico or Belize. &nbsp;So if you want to really lean into that difficulty, this is a great place.” &nbsp;Nathaniel sees guides as pivotal players in the success of anglers testing their mettle on the gamefish of the Keys. &nbsp;In fact, Nathaniel believes that the guides are perhaps the best thing about the whole Keys fishery. “The level of qualification of the guides down here is really, really high on average,” he states. &nbsp;“And the guides are engaged in advocacy and conservation. It’s a real community, and you don't really see that in other places. &nbsp;Additionally, we’ve got folks that have been guiding here for thirty years. And we've got folks that fish with the same guide each year for thirty or forty days. &nbsp;Even if it’s just that first trip that we facilitate — those are the relationships that I'm the most excited about, and the most proud of. &nbsp;Because for serious anglers, once you find the right guide and develop a relationship with that person, you will fish better together than with anyone else, and you'll accomplish things that you wouldn't ever be able to do alone.”

Part of Tommy's business also revolves around guiding for waterfowl, but the season is much shorter. While Tommy cherishes his time both on the boat and in the blind, he realizes that understanding his personal motivations for being outside is crucial to prioritizing his own free time during the duck hunting season — and giving his clients the most enriching experiences.Over the years, Tommy's realized that, while skiff time and hunting time usually happen in different settings, the spaces they occupy in his own mind aren’t all that disparate. &nbsp;“Sure, there’s distinction as it relates to species or pursuit when it comes to hunting versus fishing, but in the end, it’s all hunting. I’m always hunting for a specific scenario where the fish or game is going to congregate, feed, and let their guard down. &nbsp;I guess at the end of the day, I would say I’m more of a hunter at heart because of the way I fish.”<img src="https://static.anycreek.com/content/BBP_0006_1_fd7158ac09.jpeg" alt="BBP_0006-1.jpeg">It’s true — sight fishing and hunting both attract folks who love the intensity of visual pursuits, and the challenge of constant situational awareness. &nbsp;Tommy uses this to his advantage — to help him do his job and put his clients in the best position for success. &nbsp;“On the water, I’m always hunting for a pattern — a pocket of water on a certain wind direction, a situation where I feel a fish is most likely to eat a fly. That’s the whole game for me with fishing: finding them in a scenario where the feeding mechanism is engaged. &nbsp;Once that switch is flipped in a fish’s mind, it all comes down to presenting the fly.”Throughout his time ‘hunting’ for both fish and fowl, duck hunting has played a critical role in cementing Tommy’s own personal relationships in life. “Duck hunting has a way of drawing extremely like-minded folks together,” he acknowledges. “A lot of lifetime memories and bonds are forged standing in a marsh.” Tommy was first introduced to waterfowling at a young age by his grandfather — a family tie that helped set the stage for a lifelong obsession. He recalls how his grandpa and his friends were trailblazers in their Florida hunting community. “When I was a kid, he would tell me stories and show me pictures of his wing-shooting adventures around the world — to Mexico, Argentina, Canada, the North Platte River Valley out West. &nbsp;I can’t recall an exact story that really piqued my interest. It was really more the collection of experiences and the passion that he had when he talked about duck hunting that really drew me into it.”Tommy’s goal as a guide is to help people along their journey to discovering their own outdoor passions; this holds true for both his hunting and fishing clients. “Guiding puts you and your client into this very personal space that’s only found standing waist-deep in the marsh or baking on the deck of a skiff for ten hours. Watching my clients come full circle is extremely rewarding — going from barely being able to cast a fly ten feet to absolutely crushing it on a day with lots of shots at fish. That’s extremely rewarding. On the hunting side of things, I love watching someone’s reaction when you call and put a group of birds in their lap, they swing around, and the client shoots a trophy bird they’ve been pursuing. That’s rewarding too.”Tommy thinks of his own role a bit differently depending on whether he is guiding for fish or waterfowl, but feels that the sweetest moments in both cases are usually the hardest-earned. “With ducks, you need to help your client stay hidden and take decent shots, and that’s about it. With fishing, the client needs to be organized and proficient in their casting, while also understanding how to present the fly at the right time. Ultimately, it’s always on them to seal the deal when the moment comes.” Each trip, Tommy does everything he can to help facilitate success for his clients depending on the situation. Generally though, he knows he is always hunting for that ‘point of no return’ — when the dice have been rolled, the fish or birds have fully committed to the trap that’s been laid, and the client takes the reins. “When I can line up a shot perfectly with the conditions, and the fish rushes the fly, or the birds start back-peddling over the decoys — that moment is why I do it. That’s when I feel I’ve done my job.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://static.anycreek.com/content/IMG_3096_0b0d80e8ac.jpeg" alt="IMG_3096.jpeg"></figure>Reflecting on one’s own introduction and draw to the sport can certainly help anyone make the most of their time outdoors. Personal motivation can be hard to fully distill, but the very beginning is usually a good place to start the search. “I remember my very first experience waterfowl hunting,” recounts Tommy. “I jump-shot a couple of mallards on a creek in Western Nebraska at about age ten with my cousins. The sounds and colors of those drakes are burned into my mind forever.” Even after countless hours calling and working ducks over spreads, that moment is there to stay for Tommy, and perhaps holds the ‘why’ factor behind his life outside. When asked to choose one dream trip — hunting or fishing — his vision was pretty precise: “Oh man! That is a tough question to narrow down. But I’d have to say hunting mallards over small water, looking at a snow-capped mountain range with my cousins and best friends.” Specific? Sure, but maybe not all that surprising.
